The Greece Police Athletic League is a non-for-profit organization that was founded in 1975 by retired Greece Police Chief Gerald Phelan. The program is used as a way to foster positive community involvement between police officers and our youth. Retired Chief Phelan's goal was to keep children off of the streets by involving them in sports with officers from the department. Over time, the organization has provided many different sporting leagues that included boxing, basketball, football, softball, and now bowling. Today, the program is run by Gerald's son who is the retired Town of Greece Police Chief and current PAL President, Patrick Phelan. Chief Phelan was with the Greece Police Department from 1989 to 2021 and has been a part of PAL since his youth when he participated in the program himself.
The program strives to teach children sport fundamentals, self-esteem, social skills, competitive skills, sportsmanship, leadership, and improve school performance. This is accomplished by using police officers within the department as coaches, instructors, and mentors for the kids participating. This program is intended to be more than simply learning to play a sport; it is dedicated to the positive development of our communities’ youth. The program as always is free of charge and remains the only completely free PAL program within the state. This is achieved through the continued support of our amazing community that generously donates to this wonderful program each year. We thank you for the continued support and we hope to see you on the field!
